Peter Carroll

My life has never been without music. As a child I learnt the piano. As a teenager I listened and absorbed a variety of musical styles as well as playing the guitar and a bit of drums in jamming sessions with my mates.

Family responsibilities took over in my 30s and it wasn't until my 40s that I was able to sneak a drum set into the house under the misapprehension that my son wanted to learn. It wasn't long before he decided football was more interesting to him and so I willingly took up his lessons. Shortly after that, together with a group of friends all with a keen interest in music but with dormant skills, we started a band in a garage in Farnham. We played together for five years, our last gig being in front of 200 people at the Farnham Maltings. We went out on a high! With the pressures of family and commuting, drumming took a back seat for a while.

Over the last few years, however, I've been lucky enough to get back behind the drums and have studied and passed some of the Trinity School of Music grades. Together with members of the original band and some great new talent, I now regularly play at local music festivals, parties and charity events.

As I no longer commute to work, I have decided to follow my passion for drumming and my fascination with music. My ambition is to pass on my enthusiasm to others and teach real skills to beginners, both the young and not so young, together with the enjoyment and relaxation that drumming can bring, I have signed up to the Drumsense programme as it provides a great platform to develop technique as well as giving students access to a wide base of styles. It looks like a great programme providing a lot of fun not just for beginners.

Don't forget you are never without a friend if you play drums in a band. Come and join me and start your journey to learn the art of drumming.
