Drum notation software?

Postby matthains on Tue Mar 25, 2008 3:10 pm

Anyone know of software dedicated to producing drum notation quickly and simply. If you have an idea for a beat or pattern, instead of writing it out, is there software that can do that for you and also play it back (midi or built-in soundcard software sounds)?

Thanks

I don't know of anything specifically geared towards drums. I use a Mac and I'm currently experimenting with Finale 2007 (with some success) and I've used Logic in the past. I know a lot of composer/arranger types who swear by Sibelius and find it reasonably easy to use on their Windows machines.

Sibelius

Postby biketyke on Wed Mar 26, 2008 5:28 pm

Hi there!
Might I add that I have endeavoured to use Sibelius for some time now and essentially it is like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut. Primarily geared up to produce full scores, using Sibelius to write up a "simple" drum part requires drum note heads and stave positions to be set up - I use a master document for this - then a sub menu appears from where each note head type and duration must be selected prior to placing on the stave. Very long winded. Why not midi it directly in you may ask??? The answer is just 'cos I can't make it work.

Please let me know if you find anything simpler in Notation or other package?

Good luck! :D
Why, oh why did I ever get into this???

One question - do you have to start with entering tab and then convert to notation or can you simply use the notation option?

No, you can enter notation straight into it, or import from a tab.

can tabtrax generate drum notation via midi - I.E play a ppatern in real time and the notation appears on screen?

I have had a similar problem but after some time and a lot of dead ends encountered, I have found..Notepad

http://www.finalemusic.com/NotePad/Default.aspx

It's cheap, simple to use and works. And there's a 30 day trial.
