Tutor Profile: David Heywood

I've been fortunate enough to be able to teach, perform, record, mix and create music for over 20 years.

I love sharing my passion and enthusiasm for music, music technology and media and have been a classroom teacher and Head of Performing Arts in a secondary school for nearly 20 years. Some of my students are now professionals working all over the world in the creative industries, some are able to enjoy their own passion for playing and listening to music and others just happy to be more confident through the skills they developed.

I still get a buzz from seeing students progress, whether that's nailing their first beat, understanding a new concept or seeing them perform on stage and growing into accomplished musicians.

Aside from just developing a new skills or technique, there is so much that can be achieved through learning to play the drums or percussion. It's so rewarding to see students develop greater self-confidence, self-esteem, motivation, time management skills, social skills and organisation to name but a few!

I'm an experienced gigging drummer and percussionist. I can cover all genres and styles but l really like to play any music that creates an emotive response. I play both acoustic and electronic drum kits (I sometimes even have both kits on the same gig!) and have an extensive percussion rig.

As a performer, I love playing all genres of music and am just as happy sat behind a huge drum kit as I am adding a delicate shaker part in an acoustic band. For me, it's all about playing for the song and adding just what is needed, having the skills to go mad when it fits but focus more on adding that all important feel and groove.

I've got a range of studio and live production experience ranging from full track production, live festival production, front of house mixing for live concerts including for the BBC/ITV and post production mixing of live events.

If you're interested in drum or percussion lessons, please get in touch! Lessons can take place in my home in Rawtenstall, Rossendale or it might be possible for me to teach in your own home on your kit. If you haven't got one yet, I'm more than happy to discuss the options and a help you find the best one for your budget and needs!
