Tutor Profile: Steve Carter

Biography

I have been playing the snare drum for over 30 years in the military and pipe bands. My early experience was in Sea Cadets Drum & Bugle Band age 12. When I was 18 I joined the Irish Guards and after my basic training joined the Corps of Drums. I soon became interested, in Pipe Band drumming. I was impressed by the style, technical ability of the players and the high tension snare drum they used, and I transferred to the Pipe Band. During my time in the army we played all over the world and when stationed in Chelsea Barracks in London we performed public duties including “Trooping the Colour” and “Changing the Guard at Buckingham Palace.”

After I left the army in 1986 I joined the British Airways Pipe Band based at Heathrow airport, continuing playing abroad and in Pipe Band competitions.

In 1990 I moved to Wellingborough in Northamptonshire and taught the drum section of the newly formed Northampton Pipe Band. Looking back over my time of drumming I always had ambition to play the kit drum. I have been playing since the summer of 2008 and thanks to Colin, Nick and the Drumsense Programme I am now in a position to teach others, both in Pipe Band Drumming and obviously Kit Drumming using the Drumsense Programme.
