Tutor Profile: Paul Gant

Biography

I have been playing the drums since the age of 18. Within about two months of starting, I joined my first semi-professional band and have been playing in local rock, blues and function bands since that time.

I was originally tutored by John Savage and then Gary O’Toole and Paul Elliot. I’m currently being tutored by Colin Woolway.

In 2004, I began teaching and joined the Drumsense Programme. There are several reasons why I’m a Drumsense teacher. Firstly, the excellent programme makes the lesson more enjoyable for both the student and teacher. Secondly, I like the way that the exercises progressively build, giving a spiral rather than linear structure to the learning. This creates a solid foundation for more advanced playing. The teaching materials are clear and concise and act as a ‘skeleton’ that supports more advanced study materials. The programme therefore is suitable for players of all levels – you can take the programme as far as you want to! Finally, being an eternal student, I’ve also discovered that my playing has also improved because of the Drumsense Programme. It’s a win – win situation for student and teacher.

On a personal level, as a teacher I am able to demonstrate exercises on both left and right handed set ups. I can also teach students who adopt the 'open handed' approach. My students are currently aged from 8 to 40 years and I enjoy teaching people of all ages and abilities.
